The Promise of Peace Gardens created a tremendous impact with over 5,000 families as we established and sustained 15 food gardens in Dallas, Texas from 2009 through 2022. We saw families unite in our communities and become informed consumers and growers of their food. We saw children thrive and become leaders as they worked and volunteered in the gardens. We also experienced loss as the lands where we grew would become sites for development and urban growth. When we visited the town of Mineola and the Mineola Nature Preserve in 2022. The rural landscape in the Piney Woods presented opportunities that do not exist in urban settings. When we received the green light to establish a garden at the Mineola Nature Preserve, we knew that moving our headquarters to Mineola would open possibilities that would not be obtainable in Dallas.
Now we are close to our very first Okrapalooza at the Mineola Nature Preserve where P.O.P. is sustaining a beautiful food garden. We have a thriving food garden at the Mineola Intermediate and Middle School where we deliver after-school programming, and we are moving toward a Farm to School program on 14 acres of available school property!
Come along for the journey and grow food justice!
